Our horses
The Icelandic horse has served the people of the windy
and harsh environment of Iceland for over a thousand years. For centuries
it served as the only means of transportation, in addition to being an
invaluable helper in farm work. The Icelandic horse continues to be an
important part of the Icelandic way of life.
The horse itself is quite small, its average height
ranging from 122 to 142 cm. It is nevertheless strong and agile, renowned
for its endurance. The Icelandic possesses two additional gaits: the tölt,
a specialty of the Icelandic horse, is a very smooth four-beat gait; and
the pace, where the horse moves both legs on the same side together.
Every Icelandic horse can be considered a pure-bred,
as the import of any animals has been banned in Iceland since the 12th
century. In doing so, the far-sighted people of Iceland have managed to
keep the best traits of this breed alive to the present day.

Spori of Kopsahovi
is well-formed, with each muscle in its place. The chestnut-coloured
Spori has a nice touch of white at the base of his thick mane, and
a pair of extraordinarily large and beautiful eyes, which he uses
to charm every horse lover. Spori is 6 years old, and still somewhat
childish in temper, which makes him better suited for the more experienced
rider.

Krunkka is a dark beauty,
10 years of age. The Icelandic name "Krunkka" stands for
"raven", and not without reason: Krunkka is completely
black, apart from a spot of white hair on her forehead. Krunkka
is very easy to handle, and enjoys serving people. Of the horses
here at Paunolanmäki stable, Krunkka is the surest tölter!

Hrói is a -year
old gelding, brought here from Iceland in May 2002. Thanks to his
well adapted nature Hrói has nevertheless settled very well
here in eastern Finland. You seldom come across a better or more
friendly horse. Hrói may not be the most beautiful of horses
in the traditional sense - its mane is thin and the coat shaggy
- but his character and manners well make up for what he loses in
looks. Hrói is chestnut-coloured, with a tail and mane of
the much sought-after colour of gray, which is said to bring luck
in Iceland!

Timon of Kopsahovi
is, at the age of 6, a young but fully trained and attentive charmer.
It is a very curious and good tempered gelding. Timon's colouring
is chestnut skewbald, bearing the likelihood of a true indian horse,
that is!
During trips, Timon is always enthusiastic in
leading the bunch, but it won't lose its nerve further down the
line.
